Dove Cote Cottage
Chris and Sarah bought this three bedroom period stone cottage to be their new family home. Brimming with character and on an extensive plot, the cottage had huge potential.
Originally built as a barn in 1706 the building was converted into a family home in 1916. The cottage had many original features worthy of retention including stripped wooden floors, period doors and fireplaces. Extensive gardens backed onto the property which was flanked by a detached garage with a first floor annex.
With sensitive renovation work and a contemporary extension the family have created their forever home.

The cottage was in a reasonable condition but much of the interior was dated and a refresh was long overdue. There was some essential maintenance required to the exterior that could be also be completed as part of the renovation work. The exterior walls had been covered over with a dry-dash render hiding the original stone beneath.
Chris and Sarah wanted to retain and enhance the cottage’s original features whilst extending the cottage to meet their needs as a growing family. Complete Architecture were appointed to assist them with the design and help bring the project to life.
Working closely with the client a detailed design was prepared and submitted for planning approval. The design included a contemporary extension to provide a modern kitchen / family room with fully glazed bi-folding doors creating a visual link to the expansive rear garden. A smaller first floor rear extension would provide the missing fourth bedroom. An oak framed side extension would provide a stronger entrance and added kerb appeal.
Following receipt of planning approval technical drawings were prepared and a full plans application was submitted to building control for approval. Working with an engineer during this stage ensured that structural matters were considered and resolved wherever possible before any construction work started on site.
The construction work was undertaken and completed during 2016. A full scheme of repairs and maintenance was also undertaken including re-roofing work and also the removal of external render exposing the original stonework.
With the renovation work complete the family will be able to enjoy this beautiful home for many years to come.
